This is the 36th year of this spectacular extravaganza!
Pune was the karmabhoomi of eminent Freedom Fighters. Social Reformers, Educationists and Great Artists Mahatma Jyotiba Phule started the education movement for women and struggled hard for upliftment of the backward class. His wife Krantijyot Savitribai Phule started the country’s 1st school for girls at Bhidewada in Pune. Freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak visualized the importance of Ganeshotsav festival and used it effectively as a platform to spread the message of freedom.

Pune is nestled in the Western Ghats of the Sahyadri mountains. This Queen of the Deccan is also known as the Social Cultural, Educational, Industrial and IT-software capital of Maharashtra. With the emergence of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharal, who founded the Maratha empire, Pune became a prominent part of Maharashtra. Pune gained cultural importance during the period of the second Peshwa Thorala Bajirao who ruled from 1720 to 1740. Monuments such as the majestic Shaniwarwada, built in 1736 and Vishrambaugwada stand testimony to this glorious history.
Lord Ganesh is among the most beloved of gods of Hindus Regarded as the remover of obstacles, no prayer or work starts without first paving homage to him. In the month of August-September (Bhadrapad) Pune city is adorned with abundance of greenery. Nature is refreshed by the generous monsoon. Everybody is prepared to welcome Lord Ganesh in the city. Ganeshotsav is celebrated from Ganesh Chaturthi (4″ day of Bhadrapad) to Anant Chaturdashi (14″ day of Bhadrapad). Pune Festival was started in the year 1989 by Shri. Suresh Kalmadi, Ex MP present President of Pune Festival along with Bharatratna Late Pt. Bhimsen Joshi as President, Eminent Leader Late Shel, Jayantrao Tilak as Chief Patron and Late Shri. Krishnakant Kudale as Chief Co-ordinater. The main objective of this event was to bring together the diverse folk arts and classical talents that co-exist in India on one platform.
Starting out as a local event, Pune Festival has over the years, gained national and international publicity and evolved into one of India’s foremost cultura event. Internationally renowned maestros and prominent artists showcase their delightful performances in this festival.
